Antofagasta Plc reported Wednesday that it would ask US officials to reconsider a proposed 20-year ban on mining in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters region, a plan announced last week that would block its Twin Metals copper and nickel project.

According to Julie Padilla, chief regulator of Twin Metals, “if we can demonstrate that we can meet or exceed all applicable (environmental) standards, we have the right to go ahead with this project.”

The US Forest Service last week proposed the 20-year ban, overturning a decision by former President Donald Trump and launching a review of how mining could affect the popular outdoor recreation area on the US-Canadian border.

The Forest Service, part of the Department of Agriculture, controls the acreage of the site. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management, part of the Department of the Interior, controls the underground copper deposit and must approve plans for mineral extraction.
