The point on the Italian Plastic Tax.
Yesterday, May 20, the Council of Ministers discussed the Decree Support Bis “Misure urgenti connesse all’emergenza da Covid-19, per le imprese, il lavoro, i giovani, la salute e i servizi territoriali”.
Among the measures provided for in the draft, there is also the postponement of the application of the Plastics Tax by six months, to January 2022. The entry into force was scheduled for July 2021 and will affect plastic products of single use, with a tax of 450 euros per ton. Excluded are plastics that can be composted according to UNI EN 13432 and those obtained from recycling, even for a portion, as well as all medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging.

Commodity Evolution Plastic Index
In May the prices of the main types of plastic settled down, moving in a range of +6% and -2.80%. The only exception is represented by the copolymer Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN), which recorded a +34% increase compared to April prices. We believe that tensions in this market are not yet over. U.S. production could experience disruptions caused by the hurricane season that begins in June. Almost all polymer prices are very high due to material shortages in the European market. Our Commodity Evolution Plastic Index remains at absolute highs (data since 2006).
