The World Steel Association announced that world crude steel production was 152.6 mt in August this year, down 3.7% for the month and up 2.2% year-on-year.
In the January-August period, world crude steel production stood at 1.25 billion tonnes, up 0.2% year-on-year.

In August, Asian crude steel production increased by 3.5% year-on-year to 115.7 million tonnes. In this month, China’s crude steel production was 86.4 million tonnes, up 3.2% year-on-year; Japan’s crude steel production was 7.1 million tonnes, down 2.9% year-on-year; India’s crude steel production was 11.9 million tonnes, up 17.4% year-on-year; South Korea’s crude steel production was 5.6 million tonnes, down 5.9% year-on-year.

On the other hand, the EU-27 countries produced 9.1 million tonnes of crude steel in August, down 4.4 % year-on-year. In the same month, Germany’s crude steel production fell by 1% year-on-year to 2.8 million tonnes.

Turkey produced 2.8 million tonnes of crude steel in the same month, down 2.9% year-on-year. CIS crude steel production was 7.5 million tonnes, up 10.7% year-on-year, while Russia’s estimated crude steel production was 6.4 million tonnes, up 8.9% year-on-year.

In the same month, North America produced 9.2 million tonnes of crude steel, down 2.6% year-on-year, while US crude steel production was recorded at 7 million tonnes, up 1.1% year-on-year. South American crude steel production fell 8.1% year-on-year to 3.4 million tonnes, while Brazil produced 2.7 million tonnes of crude steel, down 5.9% year-on-year.

Africa’s crude steel production increased 16.1% year-on-year to 1.5 million tonnes in August. The Middle East produced 2.8 million tonnes of crude steel, down 16% year-on-year.
