World crude steel production in February fell by 1% year-on-year to 142.4 million tonnes, according to data from the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
In January-February this year, global crude steel production decreased by 0.8% year-on-year to 297.8 million tonnes.
In February, crude steel production in Asia was 106.6 million tonnes, up 3 per cent, with China estimated at 80.1 million tonnes, up 5.6 per cent, Japan at 6.9 million tonnes, down 5.3 per cent, India at 10.0 million tonnes, down 1 per cent, and South Korea at 5.2 million tonnes, up 1.1 per cent – with all comparisons on a year-on-year basis.
The EU-27 countries produced 10.5 million tonnes of crude steel in February, down 12.6% year-on-year. In the same period, Germany produced 3 million tonnes, down 6.9% year-on-year.
Turkey produced 2.1 million tonnes of crude steel in February, down 28.9% year-on-year. The CIS reported crude steel production of 6.4 million tonnes, down 21.3% year-on-year, with Russia’s production estimated at 5.6 million tonnes, down 8.6% year-on-year.
In North America, crude steel production in February was 8.3 million tonnes, down 5.5%, with the US producing 6 million tonnes, down 5.3%, both year-on-year. Crude steel production in South America in February was 3.2 million tonnes, down 3.1% year-on-year, with Brazil producing 2.5 million tonnes, down 6.7% year-on-year.
In the month under review, Africa produced 1.1 million tonnes of crude steel, down 11.9% year-on-year. In the Middle East, crude steel production was 3.5 million tonnes, up 11.5%, while Iran’s estimated production was 2.4 million tonnes, up 14.6%, both year-on-year.
