Produzione mondiale di acciaio grezzoThe World Steel Association (Worldsteel) announced that world crude steel production fell by 10.8% year-on-year to 140.7 million tonnes in December last year. For the year as a whole, world crude steel production stood at 1.83 billion tonnes, down 4.3% year-on-year.

In December, crude steel production in Asia was 104.9 million tonnes, down 9.2 per cent from the same month in 2021.

  • India’s crude steel production was 10.6 million tonnes, an increase of 0.8% year-on-year;

  • South Korea‘s crude steel production was 5.2 million tonnes, down 11.6% year-on-year.
  • The EU-27 countries produced 9.2 million tonnes of crude steel in December, down 16.7 per cent year-on-year. During this period:

  • German crude steel production fell by 14.6 % year-on-year to 2.7 million tonnes.

  • In the same month, Turkey produced 2.7 million tonnes of crude steel, down 20 per cent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s steel imports increased by 2.7 per cent in 2022.

According to preliminary foreign trade data compiled by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) and the Undersecretariat of Customs, the value of Turkish iron and steel imports fell 39.6 per cent year-on-year to $1.70 billion in December last year, ranking sixth among products with the highest trade value.

For the whole year, the value of Turkey’s iron and steel imports was $28.37 billion, up 2.7% year-on-year. Turkey’s steel exports decreased by 14.3% in 2022

The country’s trade deficit was $9.70 billion in December last year, up 42% from the same month in 2021. For the year as a whole, the foreign trade deficit increased 137% year-on-year to USD 109.54 billion.

In the month in question, the value of iron and steel exports ranked ninth on the list of products with the highest export value in the country, while the value of these exports dropped by 54.3% compared to December 2021 to USD 800.09 million.

In the same month, the export value of steel products, ranked sixth on the list of the country’s highest export value products, was recorded at $895.48 million, up 0.3% year-on-year.

On the other hand, the value of iron and steel exports in 2022 was $14.63 billion, down 14.3% from the previous year, while the value of iron and steel goods exports was $10.54 billion, up 19.7% from the previous year.

CIS crude steel production fell by 28.4 per cent year-on-year to 6.2 million tonnes;

  • from Russia stood at 5.5 million tonnes, down 11.3% year-on-year.

In the same month, North America produced 8.8 million tonnes of crude steel, down 9.9% year-on-year, while US crude steel production was recorded at 6.5 million tonnes, down 8.3% year-on-year.

South American crude steel production fell 3.8% year-on-year to 3.3 million tonnes, while Brazil produced 2.5 million tonnes of crude steel, down 5.2% year-on-year.

African crude steel production fell 8.9% year-on-year to 1.1 million tonnes in December. The Middle East produced 3.7 million tonnes of crude steel, up 0.4% year-on-year, while Iran produced 2.7 million tonnes of crude steel, up 3.3% year-on-year.
