US construction contractors from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America are criticising President Joe Biden’s guidelines requiring the use of domestic steel for federal infrastructure projects.

According to the AGC, the tightening of the Buy America provisions will undermine the increased funding provided by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).  According to AGC CEO Stephen Sandherr, “It makes no sense to place unrealistic limitations on the ability of companies to procure key materials at a time when prices for these products are skyrocketing and supplies are limited. Supply chain failures are already causing companies to avoid bidding on new projects.”

In contrast to the construction industry, President Biden’s guidelines have been applauded by several representatives of the domestic steel industry.
