Preliminary implementation of Lynas Rare Earths’ Kalgoorlie processing plant has been approved after a ministerial declaration was issued under the Environment Protection Act 1986 (WA).

The declaration outlines conditions for the construction and operation of the rare earths facility that are consistent with Lynas’ proposed initiatives.

Lynas has worked closely with all levels of government to ensure that the Kalgoorlie rare earths processing plant sustainably supports the Australian government’s Critical Minerals and Modern Manufacturing strategies, the WA government’s Future Battery and Critical Minerals Industries Strategy, and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s economic diversification plans.

Lynas is now working to finalize the secondary approvals needed to implement the project. In August 2020, Lynas signed a sublease with the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder for the 135-acre area where the rare earths processing plant is being built.

Lynas Rare Earths was founded as an ethical and environmentally responsible producer of rare earth materials and is the world’s only significant producer of separate rare earth materials outside of China.
